With just 3.95 square meters of green space per person, Santiago’s La Florida district falls well short of the WHO’s nine-square-meter standard. Quebrada de Macul Urban Park, in the Andes foothills, serves as a vital ecological corridor, helping regulate water flow, prevent erosion, and reduce heat and noise pollution.

A 2025 tree-planting campaign aims to boost biodiversity and improve quality of life in the densely populated area. The ecological restoration project uses tree species adapted to the Mediterranean climate to boost shade, stabilize soil, support biodiversity, and absorb carbon dioxide.
